UK takes the lead in banning Microbeads - Will Europe follow?

A ban on all products manufactured with Microbeads has recently been passed in the UK and hopefully will follow in the rest of Europe.

Why? Because these tiny bead harm marine life and it is impossible to filter them and remove them from the chain.

Thousands of tonnes of plastic microbeads from products such as exfoliating face scrubs and toothpastes wash into the sea every year, where they harm wildlife and can ultimately be eaten by people.

In 2016 Elim made a decision to remove all the micro-beads from products and replace them with Cellulose. A vegetable fibre that is completely biodegradable and kind to the environment. These fibres dissolve and disintegrate but still provides a magnificent exfoliation experience.

Previously the Elim AHA and Body Scrub was manufactured with Polyethylene, but recently it has been replaced and what seemed like the only option at the time has now become a complete no-no in the laboratories where Elim designs and formulates.

“Jojoba Oil Beads also offer a better experience and although these products are more expensive to formulate with it is time that manufacturers start taking responsibility says CEO Shantelle Booysen of Elim. We have a share and it is only ignorance that made us manufacture with Microbeads, but now that we know and understand the harm it does, there is no more excuses.”

In 2015 a tax was introduced on plastic carrier bags, we now see 9bn fewer bags being used in the UK which means that implementation of these rules has a direct effect. and It’s making a real difference.

We urge all our fellow manufacturers to take the leap and move to biodegradable granules in their formulations and more than that we are asking consumers to enquire and buy products that are free from microbeads.
